Southern Tasmanian Workings
20th October 2005

This section overs the Main Line from Rogerville to Parattah.
After the climb up to Rogerville its downhill to Brighton. Another climb out of Brighton and then through the first loop, at Tea Tree. Then the line climbs to Rekuna and drops down to Campania. From here the line hugs the side of the range, well away from the main road until Colebrook is almost reached. From here is the notorius climb up to Rhyndaston Tunnel. The line not only climbs steeply, but through very tight curves including Coal Mine Bend and up to the tunnel. Many trains have failed in this section. On one night both no 32 and no 36 freights stalled, to be rescued by units off the following trains, ie no 36 and no 44.!!!
Sometimes the two trains would combine or other times the following units would cut off their train and push up the stalled train, then detach past the tunnel and return to pick up their train. Once past Rhyndaston the line is a bit easier passing Lake Tiberias, Stoner and then Parattah, where there is another loop.

It's late, in fact it's 20.08 on a hot Friday. The rails, fencing and telephone wires are glistening in the late backlit light. Then a roar of rowdy GM's shatters the peace as 2008-2021-2020 climb out of Brighton with a late running no 32 paper train.
