Rails through the Hobart Environs
20th October 2005

This collection covers various workings inside the Hobart Metropolitan area. For the purposes of this website this stretches from Hobart yard limits [ near the Tasman Bridge] to Rogerville, some 25 kilometres north of Hobart .This short section includes some very nice locations situated so conveniently to rail enthusiasts living in the Hobart area.
Also this area covers the Derwent Valley Branch from Bridgewater Junction to Boyer and New Norfolk.
However some spots have been recently spoilt due to extensions of the cycle track running from The Domain to almost Claremont Village. This track is laid mainly on the former second track bed before it was torn up to become a single line. Other threats recently have placed this line in some jeopardy, including a parcel of land purchased at Rogerville to house a new freight terminal. Although this proposal has gone quiet as of late. The rail/road bridge at Bridgewater, despite plans for a new high level road bridge just south of the present structure appears to be safe due to heritage reasons. This would appear to ensure rail can continue to access Hobart providing of course there is such traffic offering. Rogerville these days acts more as a transfer point and sidings for traffic to or from the Derwent Valley Branch.
