Winter Scenes
1st June 2007 to 31st August 2007

Photographs covering the winter period.

For most of winter I have been hibernating.!!!.
It's been a very cold and quite drab trainwise winter too. Many daytime services which were photographic targets last year were not running this year, so opportunities for photography in the south of the state have been very limited. This combined with the total absence of heritage rail operations meant a quiet winter. However starting in August, a new timetable is in effect, creating some interesting changes down in the south. The additional running of a Bell Bay to Hobart train in addition to the existing overnight Burnie-Hobart train has provided some very interesting running times in the first week of operation. 53 often running in daylight, south from Western Junction. These trains don't both necessarily run on the same days, but some days do. Will be interesting to see the pattern as things settle down.
Roll on the spring.

MKA2134/D2021/MKA2131/D2020 come off the causeway at Granton with the 'new' service from Bell Bay as train no 53. Also note the 'new' MKA unit, 2131 as third unit, making one of it's first trips down South. Variations in the colour scheme are evident. Tuesday 31st July, 2007, Time 09.22

No 53 passes through the wayside site of Lowdina on Tuesday 31st July 2007, Time 08.25. Well almost an isolated spot, note the dog in the photograph from the unattended property, who took a dislike to me and barked for 10 minutes constantly as the train neared. Fortunatly it ran off as I attempted to get back to my vehicle. Not recommended for video photographers.!

'new' MKA 2131 leads an older relation ZP 2100 with a handful of HF coal hoppers ex Hobart on the afternoon of Sunday August 19th, 2007. The train has just left the main at Bridgewater Junction, and is seen here on the Derwent Valley Branch. These locos would also form part of the power for the evenings no 32 paper train. Unusually it appears there was no southbound empty paper train this afternoon.
